We made a pig fly

Warning: this post may contain content that is unsuitable for animal rights activists and those sensitive to unintentional harm done to wild creatures.

So we’ve been on the Big Island of Hawaii for the past ten days. Wild goats, turkeys and pigs run loose all over the place.

The goats graze along the major highways during the day and at night wild pigs cross the roads. Four nights ago we were 1/4 mile from home driving in the dark. I was praying we wouldn’t hit anything. No such luck. I saw the huge white pig with black spots first and screamed but there was nothing my husband could do. There was a car behind us and oncoming traffic and either side of the road is a steep drop off onto razor sharpe lava rocks.

We hit the pig and suffered major bumper damage to the car. We called our insurance and got an exchange car. The agent was rather matter of fact about it. Apparently this happens a lot. We had a $500 deductible. My husband felt awful and guilt-ridden but the entire incident struck me as funny. I was literally laughing for two days to the point of tears because it was so absurd! We never saw the pig along the side of the road so we’re hoping we just gave it a good bump with no damage.

Public Service Announcement when renting a car where wild animals are likely to run in front of your car on a suicide mission buy the insurance offered by the agency!
